Chapter 11 Audiovisual Technologies

Audio Technologies:

Traditional:  For traditional audio technologies I would love to use some audiocassettes.  I think a great way to incorporate this into the classroom would be to select a different student everyday or every week to take the audiocassette home and create a journal.  This would be a great way to understand how students lives at home can impact their work in school.  Moreover, it would give the other students an opportunity to get to know their classmates differently than in the school setting.

Emerging:  For emerging audio technologies I would use Internet radio, by finding programs that would be able to accompany a lesson that was being taught.  An example of this could be finding an Internet radio broadcast that reads the Gettysburg Address and playing this after learning about the Civil war and Abraham Lincoln.

Visual Technologies:

Traditional:  For traditional visual technologies I would love to use overhead projectors and transparencies.  One way that I would use these is by using the transparencies to draw chemical bonds for the students during a chemistry class.  By drawing the bonds in front of the students on the overhead it will give the students the opportunity to follow along and more importantly the chance to draw them in the same manner with the hopes that this can help them understand chemical bonds more effectively.

Emerging:  For emerging visual technologies I would want to use a document camera in a somewhat similar fashion as the overhead.  I would first draw a chemical bond for the students so they could follow along or draw it themselves.  However, the best part of the document camera is the zoom feature which will allow a teacher to actually show a chemical bond in action.  An example of one such use could be getting snow flakes and zooming in on them to show the students the difference between each flake, and how fast the bonds break down to form water.  There just seems to be multiple uses for this technology that can be extremely helpful to teachers and allow students to visualize things without the distraction of everyone crowding around the teacher.

Chapter 6 Digital Technologies in the Classroom.

I would definitely prefer to teach in a classroom that has more digital technology in the classroom.  It has become increasingly important for students to understand and learn how to use multiple forms of technology, because when they move out of school, into jobs or college they will likely use different technologies that can be incorporated into the school setting.  An interesting fact from the chapter has to be that the use of wireless technology or WiFi has allowed teachers to not wait when the opportunity to teach a lesson on the fly arrives.  There is nothing better than having the ability to pull up information to present to students when on such things as a field trip instead of waiting until the next class session to attempt to educate the students on a particular lesson.
